About the Authors
  • In 1944 the Chicago Convention set out the foundations of public international law regulating international air transport, but until 2016 no international agreement existed to limit its environmental impact. Sustainable Development, International Aviation, and Treaty Implementation explains why the CORSIA scheme, adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization in 2016, should be implemented in 2020 even though the adequacy of this scheme is still open to doubt and criticism. This book seeks to examine the many dimensions of the effort to contain greenhouse gas emissions from aircraft in a manner consonant with the principles of sustainable development, and examines the development of international law and policy in an area that has remained largely outside the general framework of international environmental law. International civil aviation is a significant polluter of the atmosphere, and in this volume, a group of air law and sustainable development law specialists considers how the international community can respond.

    • Takes a holistic approach to the different aspects of law-making
    • Allows readers to better understand the dynamics of international air law and the special institutions in which it is developed
    • Readers will better understand the impact of the unilateral measures of the European Union and why they were replaced by multilateral solutions

“Sustainable Development, International Aviation and Treaty Implementation” is an indispensable resource for anyone who is keen to understand the issues and challenges confronting the sustainable future growth of aviation, an industry that is fundamental to the life and connectivity of our modern economies and societies. The chapters, penned by prominent practitioners and academics in the field, explore a range of legal and policy considerations in the promotion and implementation of sustainable development in the aviation industry. It arrives at a moment when the environmental impact of international air transport and the regulation of aviation emissions has been high on the agenda of the policy-makers at the International Civil Aviation Organization and among States across the globe. It is an essential read for academics, policy makers, environmental activists, and aviation industry leaders.

Sustainable Development, International Aviation and Treaty Implementation provides a vital contribution to the current academic and political debate on sustainable development and aviation law by analyzing the practical, legal, political, and economic dimensions related to regional and international efforts currently being taken to contain greenhouse gas emissions from aircrafts in a manner consistent with the principles of sustainable development. In particular, it explains why the CORSIA scheme adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization in 2016 should be implemented in 2020 even though the adequacy of the scheme is still open to criticism. Thanks to the editors and contributors of this book, it is possible to gain important insights on how the aviation industry can evolve in the future in a sustainable manner, which is a pressing global concern as the industry is increasingly finding itself at the center of the climate change debate.
