About the Authors
  • We are used to the idea of people believing in Christ, but did the early church consider that Jesus also had faith in God? This book examines the meaning of faith in Judaism and Graeco-Roman literature, identifies two main trajectories of interest in the question of Jesus' faith, and traces the progress of these trajectories through the literature of the first four Christian centuries, up to the point where the interpretation of Jesus as a man of faith eventually proved incompatible with the orthodoxy of Nicene Christianity.

    • First comprehensive study on the faith of Jesus
    • Detailed exegesis as well as theological evaluation
    • Fresh perspective on how Jesus was understood in the early church

    Reviews & endorsements

"...a positive contribution to the familiar debate about the 'faith of Christ.'...Wallis has very helpfully set this discussion within the broader context of interest in Jesus' faith throughout the New Testament and its developments." David A. deSilva, The Catholic Biblical Quarterly

"A significant addition to the study of early christological developments." James L. Jaquette, Religious Studies Review

"Wallis maps out the evidence for the faith of Jesus....The study moves the discussion beyond solutions based only on lexical or grammatical considerations and provides a context in which faith was understood as early Christian traditions developed....A significant addition to the study of early christological developements." James L. Jaquette, Religious Studies Review
