Press Author William H. Janeway Awarded CBE by Her Majesty the Queen

Press author William H. Janeway, Ph.D., has been granted the honorary award of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by HM the Queen for services to education in support of Cambridge University and to UK/US relations.

Dr. Janeway is an active member of Cambridge University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Economics as a Marshall Scholar. His doctoral study focused on the formulation of economic policy following the Great Crash of 1929, which was supervised by Keynes’ leading student, Richard Kahn. He then went on to found the Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance and the Keynes Fellowship Fund. Currently, he serves as a Visiting Scholar in the Economics Faculty; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cambridge in America; and a Member of the Board of Managers of the Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance (CERF). He served as co-chair of the 800th Anniversary Campaign for Collegiate Cambridge from its public launch in 2005 to its successful completion in 2011.

Drawing on his forty year career in venture capital (especially as leader of the Warburg Pincus Technology Investment Team), Dr. Janeway is also author of the forthcoming 'Doing Capitalism in the Innovation Economy'. The book offers insight into how the “game” of speculation is played: not only how the Innovation Economy works, but also the essential role of experimentation and waste. In fact, he shows how it took the wastage of a bubble to fund the exploration that created Amazon, Ebay, and Google.  Today, with governments hobbled as economic actors and access to public equity markets open to only a minority of big winners, he points the way to the Innovation Economy’s renewal.

George Soros, Chairman of Soros Fund Management, praises: “I believe that Doing Capitalism will help all of us, whether academics, private sector leaders, or government officials, to see beyond shallow political dogma and move to a deeper understanding of challenges of technological advance."

Among his many other accomplishments, Dr. Janeway is a director of Magnet Systems, Nuance Communications, O'Reilly Media, and a member of the Board of Managers of Roubini Global Economics. In addition, he is a member of the board of directors of the Social Science Research Council, and a co-founder and member of the Governing Board of the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET). He is a member of the Advisory Boards of the Princeton Bendheim Center for Finance and the MIT-Sloan Finance Group.

The Press congratulates Dr. Janeway for this honorary award and for his extensive contributions to the Cambridge University community. For more information, visit BillJaneway.com.
