These two volumes use documents to chronicle the history of American theatre. The first volume covers the period 1750 to 1915, from the beginnings of theatre in the North American colonies up to the First World War. The second volume will continue the documentation, from 1915 up to the present. Both volumes are organised in chronological sections, each with its own introduction. The documents and commentary are arranged into chapters on business practice, acting, theatre buildings, drama, design, and audience behaviour. Written sources include records of business transactions, letters, newspaper reports, reviews, memoirs, and architectural descriptions. There are also numerous pictorial items.
