First published in 1948, as the second edition of a 1939 original, this textbook was aimed at undergraduates and discusses magnetism from an experimental standpoint rather than from a strictly theoretical one, allowing for more prominence in the description of fundamental experiments and the industrial applications of magnetic materials. Bates explains, 'it is no exaggeration to state that some of the most important experiments whose results have been used very many times in theoretical discussions have not been adequately described in English'. A variety of topics are covered, including susceptibility measurements with isotropic substances, the magnetic properties of crystals and radiofrequency spectroscopy. Multiple diagrams are included for reference. This book presents an account of magnetic theory and reassesses and redefines magnetism's relationship with the experimental side of physics and will be of value to scholars of physics as well as to anyone with an interest in the history of education.
