news story

Professor Stanley Wells, CBE, has been knighted in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours list, in recognition of his services to Shakespeare scholarship.

Sir Stanley is Honorary President of The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Honorary Emeritus Governor of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and a member of the Council of Shakespeare’s Globe as well as a successful writer and broadcaster. The award is granted in the 400th year since Shakespeare’s death.

Professor Wells has edited the annual Shakespeare Survey for Cambridge University Press for almost 20 years, and he is the author or editor of many Cambridge-published books including most recently Shakespeare Beyond Doubt and The Shakespeare Circle: An Alternative Biography (both co-edited with Paul Edmondson).

The Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2016 recognises the achievements of a diverse range of extraordinary individuals across the UK. This year, 10.8% of honours were awarded for work in education.

In a recent statement, Professor Wells said: “I am delighted to receive this honour. I feel myself most fortunate in having been able to spend so much of my life in the company of Shakespeare and of those who admire and enjoy his works. Throughout my career as teacher and scholar I have enjoyed and benefitted enormously from collaborating with fellow scholars from all over the world, and I hope they will share my pleasure in receiving this award.”
